What should a salon price list include?

A salon price list sets out every service with its price and, ideally, how long it takes, grouped into sections such as cuts, colour and treatments. Clients use it to choose a service, budget and plan their time, and staff use it when booking. It should also show booking details, opening hours and any requirement before an appointment, such as a skin test for colour.

When it helps

  • A hair salon printing a new price list when prices change in January.
  • A framed list at reception that clients read while waiting.
  • A list sent to new clients before a first colour appointment.
  • A beauty therapist setting out which treatments can be added to another service.

Tips

  • Print the date the prices apply from; old lists in clients' drawers cause arguments when the new prices arrive.
  • Avoid too many from prices; when every service says from, clients cannot budget and assume the real price is higher.
  • Keep the list to one side of A4 where possible; a second page is where clients stop reading.

How to make a salon price list

  1. Group services by type

Put cuts, colour and treatments under their own headings, ordered from the most booked to the least, so clients find common services first.

  2. Describe what is included

Add a short line where the name is not enough, for example regrowth up to 2 cm for a root tint, to prevent disputes at the till.

  3. Show the time each takes

List or draw each service's time in the chair; clients plan around it, and it explains why longer services cost more.

  4. Align prices on one edge

Set prices flush to one side of the page, and mark any price that varies with hair length as from, so the starting point is honest.

  5. Add booking and policies

Include phone, website and opening hours, plus key policies such as skin tests before colour or a cancellation charge.

FAQQuestions

Common questions.

Why do you need a skin test before hair colour?

Hair dye manufacturers instruct that a skin test, also called an allergy alert or patch test, is done at least 48 hours before every colour service, because some dye ingredients can cause allergic reactions. Many salons will not colour without a recent test.

What does from mean on a salon price list?

It means the price shown is the lowest for that service, usually for short or fine hair, and the final price can be higher for longer or thicker hair or extra time. A good salon confirms the price at consultation, before starting.

How often should a salon update its price list?

Many salons review prices once a year, often in January, to account for product, rent and wage costs. Whenever prices change, print a new dated list and tell regular clients ahead of their next appointment.
