What makes a good company values poster?
A good company values poster states a small number of values, usually three to five, in words people would actually say, and shows what each one looks like in practice. The best ones tie each value to a moment at work, such as when something goes wrong, and describe the behaviour expected, so the poster guides decisions rather than decorating a wall.
When it helps
- Launching values that staff have written together, in every office and depot.
- Induction for new starters who need to know how the team actually works.
- A manager referring to a value in a team meeting after something went wrong.
- Replacing an older poster of abstract words that nobody remembers.
Tips
- If a competitor could put your values on their wall unchanged, they are too generic; rewrite until they could only belong to you.
- Set the poster in type alone; stock photos of handshakes make values look like marketing rather than commitments.
- Say who wrote them; values signed by the whole team are taken more seriously than ones handed down.
How to write company values
Ask the people who do the work
Collect stories from staff about when the company was at its best and worst, and look for the behaviours that keep coming up.
Choose a few values
Narrow the list to three to five. More than that and nobody can remember them, which defeats the point of having values.
Write each one as an action
Use short imperative phrases, such as say it first or finish it, rather than single nouns like integrity, which everyone agrees with and nobody can act on.
Tie each to a moment
Say when the value applies, for example when someone is new, so people know which situation it is meant to guide.
Add one sentence of behaviour
Describe what doing it well looks like in practical terms, specific enough that someone could tell whether it happened.
FAQQuestions
Common questions.
How many company values should you have?
Three to five is the common recommendation. That is few enough for everyone to remember and apply, and enough to cover the main ways a team works. If a list grows longer, some values are usually overlapping or too vague to act on.
What are examples of good company values?
Good values are specific and actionable, such as tell the customer before they have to ask, finish what you start, make it easy for new people to ask questions, or leave things better than you found them. Each describes a behaviour someone can see.
What is the difference between a mission statement and company values?
A mission statement says what an organisation exists to do and for whom. Values describe how people in it behave while doing that work. The mission points the direction; the values shape everyday decisions along the way.
